In this stark, black and white portrait, a palm print is projected over a young woman’s face. A palm print, like a face, is uniquely individual, and the photographs in this series encourage us to consider how identities are shaped and perceived. If the palm is her own, we might—like a palm reader—see the projected lines as her history, future, or essence emerging. Or, since the woman appears transformed by the superimposed texture, it could be a new identity imposed by someone else—perhaps an abusive lover. What is your interpretation? (Captured on 35mm Tri-X film, Brussels, 1977.)
