Shaft Of Light

This cubic open shaft of the Millennium Science Complex is designed to bring natural light into the building’s entrance plaza. As I photographed it, I was struck by the powerful effect of its simple geometry, restrained color palette, and the soft interplay of light reflecting off the metallic walls. To emphasize that impact, I deepened the shadows within the plaza, removing all architectural details. The result is a composition where the structure seems to defy gravity—its angular walls floating above a vast, lightless void. (University Park, State College, Pennsylvania, June 2024)
