Silhouetted against a dramatic cloudy sky, the statues of three African warriors are part of a public art installation (“The Congo, I presume”) by Belgian artist Tom Frantzen. His work is a satire on the colonization of the Congo Free State (1885–1908) privately owned by King Leopold II of Belgium. The warriors are lined up like servile soldiers and displayed like three personal trophies of the King. They have no feet as a direct reference to the atrocities perpetrated by the State’s administration, including the severing of limbs. (Brussels, October 2021)
