His dagger firmly raised over his shoulder, centurion Verginius looks tormented but also resolved as he is ready to sacrifice his daughter Verginia—the only way he felt he could protect her from the lust of Appius Claudius, a Roman senator. This photograph captures a portion of a monumental group statue that illustrates an ancient Roman tale: “Virginius et sa fille” (Virginius and daughter), bronze, 1886, by French sculptress Élisa Bloch, at the Tervuren Park, Belgium. (Photo composite with duotone colors and texture blending, May 2022)
